I wasn’t sure on this, but have done some hunting around and it appears that sodium polyacrylate was invented by the Johnson and Johnson Baby Products in america the 1980’s.
I’m not 100% sure why he chose it … but he’s talked about sodium polyacrylate being in diapers/nappies in school, and about this experiment in science club: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWaivm9XpNg … I thought it was an awesome mini practical to do, but somehow we ended up doing some other cool practicals 🙂
