Candy: you don’t breath actually. Once we’re born our lungs are used to extract oxygen from the air and to get it into our blood. Before we’re born, our mum does it all for us! The oxygen from her blood enters our body via the umbilical cord and goes straight into our blood, along with all the other things that we need to live.

That’s why when a baby is born the nurse or doctor makes the baby cry. The baby hasn’t taken a breath before and making the baby cry makes it take it’s first breath 🙂

Well I never, I was going to answer about the baby getting oxygen from the umbilical cord (James beat me there), but I didn’t know about making the baby cry. Interesting fact Will 🙂

Yeah, the boys are right. Apparently it’s a really painful experience too, taking that first burning breath of air into new lungs that have been in a liquid environment for so long.

I read about this flotation tank thing that people sometimes use to relive that state of calm inside the womb, where they submerge themselves in this tank of fluid, basically drown, but the liquid is nutritious, allows them to breathe and keeps them alive. The point at which you come out of the tank is supposed to be like rebirth, and it is a really awful, painful experience (although I would have thought that half-drowning wouldn’t be much better).

If this sounds familiar then yes, Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol is my point of reference here, but I read up about it at the time, and it’s actually true! Some people will do anything to get their name in the papers… drowning yourself, only to be reborn. Honestly, what’s the world coming to?! 😛
