Having a life outside of science is very important. I love to see live bands and hang out with my mates. If science was my whole life, I don’t think I could enjoy it. So I guess my social life is more important to me. I’m sure the others would agree 🙂
I agree that my social life is important, and that if my work was all of my life it wouldn’t be much fun. But equally part of having a job is working at it when you’d rather be doing something else. It’s important to balance your life between work and play.
To be a good scientist, you need to be creative and able to think. Being relaxed helps you to think, so it is really important to have a good social life and to be a part of society and family.
and you also need to be able to think in the morning, so regular late nights are not ideal!
The reason that I always answer questions last, after the boys have all had a go, is because I am still trying to maintain my social life! My day today consisted of working at the BBC (for fun! I’m helping out with some of the research for the next Brian Cox series, which is AMAZING!), then came home, rushed to ballet class, came home, had some food, and now I’m answering your lovely questions! Had I not had time for ballet, I’d have had a day of nothing but staring at a computer screen, speaking to people online through that, so a social life is really important, as you need a good balance. Otherwise you might start to hate the work that you’re doing, which is a real shame. You’ll also need people to lift your mood or distract you when you get stressed out with work!
