• Question: In your opinion what is the greatest aspect of Physics Chemistry and Biology. What made you want to follow a career in Science?

      Hi!

      So firstly, I wanted to do science because I have this incurable curiosity of how things work. Science gives me a lot of the answers that I’m looking for.

      As for the greatest aspects, I am a bit of a funny one. I love my research, and become more involved the more I work at it, but as for scientific passions that I didn’t pursue as a scientific career; astrophysics (because it has even more physics in it than chemistry does, and I really didn’t like physics! It’s hard!), and tectonics, which is the study of volcanoes and earthquakes and plate movements (because even though I took geography at A level, I wasn’t sure how I could get into it, and I knew that my parents would be going mad with worry if I was always hanging around volcanoes!).

      What, in your opinion, is the greatest aspect of science?

      Hi doubleh96. For me these are the best bits.
      Physics: quantum mechanics – it’s difficult to understand, and very much a science which is developing, but it helps explain the fundamentals of what the universe is made of.
      Chemistry: Organic chemistry – this tends to deal with how complex molecules interact with each other and applies a lot to what happens in our bodies.
      Biology: Enzymology – this is the study of enzymes which are proteins which help carry out chemical reactions in our bodies. To me it’s the best part of biology because it shows us how nature has gone about making a chemistry lab in our bodies without all the Bunsen burners and mess!

      I wanted to follow a career in science because I’m a very curious person and this job lets you follow lots of “what if?” questions and try them out in the lab.

      Heya,

      I decided I wanted to follow a career in science during GCSEs. I had a really good chem teacher, that got me interested in science. I like a mixture of biology and chemistry, called biochemistry. It was a great subject at university, because you could do bits of chemistry and biology. I love biology, more than the other two because it amazes me how complicated life is. Using MRI or microscopies you can see the tissues and cells. The complexity of life is just interesting, trying to figure out how one thing evolved into another. I think the best bit about biology is the history of it. Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution.
