No – I was bullied for being short. However, having grown up (or not, as is the case!), I’ve learned to embrace my tinyness, and I think that even though it was horrible at the time, it has made me a bigger person (again, not literally, but metaphorically).
I think I hid my geekiness when I was in school a lot more, trying to just be really cool however, now I can’t stop going on about the magic of science! It is truly amazing, and sometimes, when people bully other people, it’s only really because the person doing the bullying is actually quite unhappy themselves.
No – I was bullied for being ginger. I’m the same as Suze, I didn’t let the fact that some people wanted to tease me, to stop me getting on with school. I didn’t really hide the fact that I loved science at school. I helped with the science festival we had and I helped make slime! Science was cool in it’s own way at school. Although I do go on about the amazing heart to everyone I see now…..poor them! Hehe 🙂
Just a note to add to Suze’s msg, don’t ever let ppl get you down about liking science or being a little geeky. In the end we are the ones that end up working in cool areas, splitting water or imaging the heart! Hope that helps 🙂
No – I was bullied for being dyslexic, uncoordinated and rubbish at sport!
I had a small group of friends with similar interests in science and computing and we had a lot of fun together. In the fifth and sixth form my interest in computing led to helping install the schools computer network (an ecconet system of 24 BBC microcomputers and a file sever). So I got some respect from people who were able to use them to play games in the lunch hour!
It’s the same story for me really. I was bullied to, but not for liking science. It got quite serious at some stages and ended in a few people being suspended from school. You do get through it though. And the further up the school/college/uni system you go the better it gets as people grow up and bit and you tend to surround yourself with friends who think like you.
On a random side note Mike, I’m really jealous of your hair. I’ve tried to have red bits in mine for YEARS now, but they just fade out straight away. I adore red hair! Be proud of it. It’s becoming more and more rare to have red hair now, so you’re more unique!

And Mike, his fiancée and I are all off to geek it up at Reading Festival together in August, so while they’re stuck in their normal jobs, we’ll be rocking out, right Mikey?!
