David Ingram answered on 14 Jun 2011:

Having worked as a university lecturer who was very active in research for 16 years after completing my PhD I was invited to apply for “a Chair” (the rather odd term we use) by my head of school. I had to send a CV and a statement showing excellence in research and the management of research to the University. This was reviewed by six professors from other universities and eventually I was awarded a chair in “Computational Fluid Dynamics” by the Court of the University of Edinburgh.

The final step was to sign the “Professorial Roll” a book with the details of all the Universities Professors, the signing ceremony (attended by the Duke of Edinburgh) involved about thirty other new professors.

      Thats How….

Why? Partly to be promoted, partly because it shows recognition for a lot of hard work as a scientist and teacher in a university
