The earth is thought to have formed long after the big bang (about 6 or 7 billion years ago, I read). Gravity causes particles of dust and material in space to slowly collect together over many billions and millions of years. This forms solar systems and planets. It’s not a gentle process – some of these bits of material are moving really, really fast and have lots of energy (kinetic energy).
Well on an episode of Doctor Who (called the ‘Run Away Bride’) the Doctor travelled all the way back to the big bang … and there was one BIG rock which had the most gravitational pull and pulled all the other rocks together to form Earth.

yes, but that’s Dr Who! (which I do watch every week with my son!). The Earth wasn’t there at the time of the big bang, it joined the party later.

True … but still, Doctor Who’s awesome 🙂 … which is why I chose a ‘Doctor’ as my profile picture on I’m A Scientist 🙂
