• Question: Have you ever blown something up?

      Not in reallity – I’ve done computer simulations of explosions and worked with experimentalists (from the Health and Safety Lab at Buxton) who did [They used a plastic explosive called PETN ]

      Yes! I was working on the MRI magnet and I blow up a £10,000 power amp. It meant fire engines, oxygen for me and a lot of form filling…. not great!

      Actually, we have to do loads of risk assessments before we can do an experiment of any kind to make sure we have thought of all the risks and what to do if something did go wrong! If there is any risk, we have to do something to reduce it or find another way of doing the experiment that is safer.

      So,usually nothing gets blown up, unless it’s meant to be !

      No one can prove that it was me… Even if people claim to have heard the scurrying sound of a pair of size three heels running from the scene… 😉

      No I’ve never managed to blow anything up, and there are people in my lab working with TNT!
