Question: do you ever mix random things together and see what happens?

Heya, In one of my science lessons at school, we were once given a box of chemicals and told to mix them together and see what happens. The teacher knew that we couldn’t do anything dangerous, but it was interesting to see what came out the other end. I don’t do that anymore though 🙁

I love it! I’ve been doing it since I was about 2 years old, and I think that’s what initially excited me about science, and chemistry in particular!
One of the most basic chemistry ‘experiments’ can be carried out in your own kitchen, in the form of cooking. It’s a great opportunity to cook something challenging, and see whether adding something makes something thicker or thinner, whether things change colour, or flavour, or anything else. It’s really exciting! Sadly my kitchen ‘experiments’ don’t always work. I’m a chemist, but I really can’t cook! 🙁

When I’m doing an experiment and I’m finished using a solution I tip it into my waste pot. Nothing I work with is really harmful, but there are times when I add something unusual to the waste and metals precipitate out which can look really interesting.
