I’m currently organising a 2 day meeting to bring together young scientist in my field. It’s not really another job, but it is very different to what I do day to day. It means I have had to learn about advertising, finance and sending out lots and lots of emails (something I knew how to do beforehand). But apart from that, my PhD takes up a lot of time and pays enough, so I don’t need another job. 🙂
Depends on what you call a job! As a PhD student, you can mark undergraduate lab reports for their lab courses, and you can be a demonstrator in the lab too. I have done lab marking, although I don’t trust myself to demonstrate to other people! I also invigilate some exams, which is all extra pocket money.
Excitingly, I’m at BBC Science at the moment, working on a new series, doing some research for that. I’m also off to the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology in July on an internship for a couple of months, to see what goes on there and get some work done in a completely different yet just as scientific environment.
I can only do this now because I’m writing my thesis. I haven’t really had much time over the last three years to do anything else in terms of jobs, but as we get paid to do a PhD, it’s not so bad 🙂
Like Suze don’t really have the time to do another actual job. I do do some demonstrating from time to time. This is helping students at the university who are doing their degrees with their practical work. I really like doing that because I did my degree at the same university and remember struggling with the practicals! It’s nice to give them the answers to the questions I had when I was them.
Ooh, and I also get to do loads of fun chemistry demos to schools as part of our university outreach programme, as well as with the Royal Society of Chemistry! I love my job 🙂
